CHARACTER
Name: Sojourner Ayers-Silva
Canon: Original Character
Age: 17
Demigod/Hunter/Satyr/Nymph/Magician: Demigod – Daughter of Nike (though she’s intrigued by the Hunters)
Demigod abilities: She has a heightened endurance and an insane amount of luck. Sojourner’s also coming to realize she might be faster than the average person.
Personality:
Sojourner is well aware of the simple fact that she is – in all honesty – an idiot. She agrees and even states it on numerous occasions, always with a bright smile and never aware of how self-deprecating it sounds. She isn’t really an idiot though, Sojourner just has the habit of not thinking before she speaks/acts and doesn’t necessarily pay the most attention in school. Her intelligence shows in other ways however. Sojourner is incredibly street smart and very quick on her feet – being able to improvise on the spot when put in a sticky situation. This skill has only increased over the past few years since she began her nightly activities as a vigilante – as she’s had to think her way out of a few pretty nasty situations. One could also say that she is stupidly courageous – often putting herself before others.
It is incredibly hard to get on Sojourner’s bad side. She’s incredibly friendly, going out of her way to make friends with anyone and everyone. Even people who she’s not… Particularly fond of she will continue to be friendly. Sojourner is just a happy-go-lucky person. She hates being angry at others, feeling that the emotion is a bit suffocating for her, so she tries to shrug her anger off though there are times where she can feel irritable by everything going on.
Due to her family – especially her Papa – Sojourner has grown up to have a very strong sense of justice and refuses to stand by when she sees others in trouble. As such she’s a bit protective over the younger campers – especially the newbies – going out of her way to help them. This often leads to her butting heads with older campers who like to pick on the newcomers (here’s looking at you Ares kids). She’s also not afraid to throw a punch in a fight, and perhaps not the best judge of when to retreat and nine times out of ten has to be dragged off.
It’s also due to how she was brought up that has instilled Sojourner’s desire to protect anyone she can – which is one of the reasons the Battle of Manhattan hit her so hard. She had never felt so utterly helpless before as she watched other campers die. It’s something that is still haunting her, but Sojourner is doing her best not to let the memories stop her. Instead she’s trying to channel that to fuel her desire more, and it is making her rethink her plans for after her time at Camp Half-Blood is over.
In terms to her mother… Well Sojourner is honestly pretty indifferent. It’s a bit embarrassing but Sojourner will admit that up until the day Nike claimed her she was utterly convinced she had just appeared one day out of thin air. Really though she’s not sure how to feel about having a mother – especially when she has two amazing father’s who have filled the role Nike could have with ease. As well as a fantastic Aunt who answered any of her female questions (like the day she first got her period and Dad had just screamed for Aunt Rosa before retreating). She is – however – incredibly excited about the fact she has siblings. Now that is cool.
AU History:
The first memory Sojourner has is of the day she was adopted by a man named Rhyleigh Ayers. She was only three years old at the time, barely up to his knee. Rhyleigh had knelt down to her, asking if she wanted to go home with him and of course she had said yes. After that he picked her up, carrying her from the adoption center. Of course she knows more happened, but that first meeting was all that she cared about. Along with the fact he bought her a teddy bear she later dubbed Renegade (and still has, he sits on her bed every summer).
Their lives weren’t very easy, and at the tender age of five Sojourner thought it was a brilliant idea to run away with the thought that it would make Dad’s life easier. The plan was ill-thought out and ended up with Sojourner being picked up by one Officer Silva and taken to the police station where he sat with her - asking all sorts of questions as they colored. She’s not really sure how he had done it but by the end of the day Dad had come to get her, the utterly terrified look and subsequent relief on his face sticking with Sojourner from that day on. She never thought to run away again.
But that wasn’t the only important thing that happened that day. In fact Sojourner would argue that wasn’t even the most important thing that happened period. The most important thing that happened was that was the day Dad met Officer Silva, who became Mister Afonso, who became Papa when she was eight.
Life still wasn’t very easy – but they were better when it had been just her and Dad. They moved into Papa’s townhouse, which he shared with his younger sister, her Aunt Rosa (and later her baby cousin Gracia). It was crowded and it was loud at times. There were nights when Dad and she stayed up (well she would try to stay up) while Papa was at work – but that’s what happened when one of your Dad’s was a police officer in a city with a high crime rate.
Sojourner was a very energetic child – and her energy only seemed to grow with each passing year instead of diminishing. School was a challenge, she was unable to focus most times, falling behind in her work and leading to many frustrated nights where she would sit at the table with Dad or Papa or Aunt Rosa. Those nights generally ended in aggravated tears. Upon being held back in fifth grade Sojourner just decided to accept the fact that she was an idiot. This was a fact that not only her family refused to accept, but also one of her new classmates. Enter a boy named Lucas who took it upon himself to sit with Sojourner and work with her – at least as much as a ten year old could – after she helped him with a few bullies. There were still many nights that ended in frustrated tears, but they were better. Often she overheard Papa and Dad talking about her problems, Papa often suggesting they take her to a doctor while Dad vehemently refused. Those conversations always ended in arguments and Sojourner sneaking off to Lucas’s house which was three blocks from her. Thankfully they were rare occasions, but it was on one of these occasions that Sojourner’s life changed drastically.
She’d been walking down the streets with Papa after she’d taken “sanctuary” (as she liked to call it) at Lucas’s after overhearing a hushed conversation. Balanced precariously on the curb and swinging their linked hands as they chattered away about really unimportant things. That was when the hellhounds appeared and…
Well Sojourner doesn’t remember much besides screaming and her Papa shielding her. When she woke up she was in the hospital suffering from minor injuries. Papa’s injuries were more severe, but he still greeted her with a bright smile when he saw her. They said they were dogs who had attacked them, something Sojourner couldn’t believe and even said so. They all chalked it up to her imagination, or at least the doctors and nurses did. Papa and Dad shared a look at her words. Sojourner wouldn’t learn the meaning behind the look until they were both released from the hospital.
She would later learn that night they had been saved by a group Sojourner would later come to know as the Hunters of Artemis. She would also learn (weeks later after many apparent discussions she could never ease drop) she was not a normal young girl. A pair of siblings came to see them, a boy and a girl. Sojourner hadn’t been paying much attention, and let out a long-suffering sigh when Papa and Dad made her sit in the living room with their guests.
At least until the boy revealed himself to be a satyr and the girl a nymph. Sojourner’s jaw had hit the ground, and her baby cousin spent the rest of their little meeting in the nymphs lap demanding her hair braided.
That summer she found herself in the back of the car as they drove to Camp Half-Blood, Sojourner bouncing excitedly in her seat (though she was bummed that the plans she had made with Lucas for the summer were cancelled). She was thirteen years old at the time and unclaimed, thus finding herself in the overcrowded Hermes cabin – though really crowded houses were something she’d become very use too. The summer flew by far too quickly for her liking, and Sojourner spent the majority of it amazed at what her fellow campers, and she herself, could do. She returned home proudly wearing her camp necklace and perhaps with a rather reckless idea.
A plan Lucas immediately told her was dumb. Who cares if you have “magical powers” (because Sojourner hadn’t been able to keep the secret from her best friend), you can’t actually become a superhero. Plus you’re thirteen. Who is going to take a thirteen year old seriously?
The conversation had ended with Sojourner pouting and her friend rolling his eyes. Still the seed had been planted and she spent the remainder of the year trying to practice her own skills, and convincing her parents to sign her up for gymnastics. The following summer she returned to Camp Half-Blood, eager to learn and train. When her second year ended she returned home, proposing the idea to Lucas again amidst homework (freshman year had finally begun and Sojourner was groaning at it). He shot her down almost immediately, but she persisted until finally he gave in and when asked why she needed his help she replied quite simply that it wasn’t something she could do by herself. Even if he would be “behind the scenes” she needed a team mate! They spent the remainder of the year preparing with the unspoken word that when she came back from camp this year they’d begin.
Sojourner used the time wisely, barely able to contain her excitement – using her heightened endurance and luck coupled with her gymnastics to begin learning parkour/free running. A hobby that lead to quite a few scrapes and exasperated sighs from Papa (Dad was always amused, and even pointed out mistakes in her moves when he caught her). When summer rolled around she arrived with a big band aid on her forearm and a limp from a sprained ankle but a bright smile. It was relatively uneventful – the normal routine. Come October though Sojourner began her double life as a vigilante (she liked going by the name Sparrow).
Being a vigilante was a lot harder then she thought it would be, but Sojourner was stubborn and thus continued. She had a distinct feeling that Lucas thought she would give up within the first week, but a month later found the fifteen year old sneaking out of her house when everyone was asleep and/or Papa was at work, racing across rooftops and putting stop to really simple crimes she saw (because while she was an idiot, she did have common sense in the form of Lucas). By the middle of January people were talking about the odd girl named Sparrow running around, something Sojourner secretly began to pride herself on.
At least until monsters began appearing. Belatedly Sojourner realized that perhaps using her demigod-abilities to be a vigilante… Wasn’t a very smart move. After this her nightly activities became divided between stopping small crimes and fighting monsters she spotted. All while keeping her identity a secret from her family…
She failed at that. One evening – after a particularly rough night that involved a couple of stymphalian birds – she tumbled into her bedroom only to find both Dad and Papa waiting for her. The fight they had that night was one for the history books.
That summer she returned to Camp Half-Blood with still healing cuts from the monsters and a frown on her lips. She was barely on speaking terms with either of her fathers. That was the year of the Battle of Manhattan and when it was all over she ran through the entrance of the camp and knocked Dad to the ground, burying her face in his shoulder. One could say that the war was an eye opener for Sojourner, as up until then she really did think she could use her abilities to save people – that she’d been doing a fairly good job of it. She spent many nights crawling between her fathers’, trying not to dream about the deaths and war. After two months of doing this her Papa finally sat with her, speaking to her about his own experiences. The dreams continued, but Sojourner felt renewed.
To both her parents displeasure the sixteen year old resumed her nightly activities – though she argued she didn’t have much of a choice. She kind of attracted monsters to their city and it was her job to keep people safe. She didn’t want to see anyone else die because she wasn’t strong enough. As there really was no stopping her a few rules were set up – much to her chagrin. Her grades needed to stay up, she couldn’t leave the house without completing all her work/if there was a test the next day and lastly she needed to be home by 3:30AM. Sojourner wasn’t exactly a fan of the rules, but listened knowing she was lucky that they were letting her continue.
Counselor: She may be older, but it’s probably safer if Jill remains the counselor.

Iris Message:
[There’s a twitter-like laugh as Sojourner uses her prism to make create a rainbow. She’s perched precariously at the top of the climbing wall seeming unworried by the lava. The bright smile is unheeded by her split lip, swollen black eye or the wrist brace that becomes visible when she waves.]
Hey you guys! Guess who went and got herself stuck on her first day back?
Anybody wanna give me a hand down? Or you could come laugh, if you want, but if you come to do that prepare to catch me if I slip cuz I’ll be aimin’ for you!
[The grin grows fiendish as she looks around the rainbow to the ground. Alright, so climbing the rock wall with a sprained wrist really wasn’t a good plan. Yet Sojourner is still laughing, the four beads on her camp necklace glinting in the afternoon sun.]
No, but seriously. Help? S.O.S! You can have my dessert for a week!
Third Person Log:
Back home Sojourner was used to staying up until almost sunrise, catching a few hours of sleep before going to school. This meant adjusting to a camp schedule of sleep was not the easiest thing to do. It didn’t help that the Nike Cabin was so quiet, way too quiet in Sojourner’s opinion. She was so use to the overcrowded Hermes Cabin, or her house back home. Here though it was just her and Jill and…
And Sojourner didn’t like silence.
Three hours of tossing and turning and she had had enough. Sojourner was tempted to risk the harpies if it meant being able to run.
Another hour and Sojourner flung the covers aside, picking up her sneakers and light green hoodie, slipping out of the Nike Cabin. Once outside she pulled her jacket on, zipping it up before her sneakers. Out of habit she pulled her circular goggles out of her jackets pocket, slipping them on over her eyes.
